Volvo Cars Completes Full Electric Pivot Ahead of EU 2035 Deadline
Swedish automaker Volvo becomes the first major European car brand to sell exclusively electric vehicles, years ahead of the EU's combustion engine ban.
All Electric, All In: Volvo's Pioneering Bet Pays Off
Volvo Cars announced in January 2026 that it had completed its transition to selling exclusively battery electric vehicles across all of its global markets, making it the first mainstream European automaker to exit the combustion engine market entirely, nearly a decade ahead of the EU's 2035 deadline banning new petrol and diesel car sales. The announcement represented the culmination of a strategic transformation initiated under CEO Jim Rowan that bet the company's future on the electric transition at a time when many competitors were hedging with hybrid strategies.
The transition has not been without pain. Volvo shed approximately 15,000 jobs in manufacturing and supply chain roles associated with internal combustion engine production during the transformation period, a process that required extensive engagement with Swedish trade unions and government employment support programmes. The company's factory in Gothenburg, which had produced petrol engines for decades, was retooled for electric drive unit production — a process that required €4 billion in capital investment and three years of implementation.
The business results have vindicated the strategy. Volvo's electric vehicles command significant price premiums in European markets — the fully electric EX90 SUV, which replaced the XC90 as the company's flagship model, starts at over €80,000 and has a six-month waiting list in most markets. Chinese buyers, while representing a smaller share of global sales following the political tensions associated with Volvo's Geely ownership, have been replaced by new customers in the United States and Middle East attracted by the brand's premium-electric positioning. Revenue per vehicle has increased substantially even as total unit volumes have declined from the peak of the hybrid era.
