Scientists at the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service have confirmed that March 2026 is breaking temperature records across Southern and Central Europe. Parts of Spain, Portugal, Italy, and France have experienced temperatures 10 to 14 degrees Celsius above their historical averages for this time of year.

On March 27, Seville in southern Spain recorded 35. 2 degrees Celsius — the highest ever temperature measured in that city during March.

The cause is a weather pattern called a 'blocking high' — a high-pressure system that has become anchored over the Atlantic and is pulling hot, dry air from the Sahara Desert deep into Europe. Climate scientists are careful to explain that no single weather event can be directly attributed to climate change.

However, they point out that events like this one are becoming more frequent and more intense as the Earth warms. The heat wave is causing several practical problems: hospitals are treating more patients for heat-related illness than at any previous March on record; energy grids are struggling under unusual demand from air conditioning that would normally still be switched off; and farmers are watching anxiously as fruit trees and vineyards have begun to flower weeks early — making them vulnerable to the cold April frosts that will likely follow this unusual warmth.
