The Group of Seven — known as the G7 — is an informal gathering of what were once considered the world's seven most advanced economies: the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Italy. The European Union also participates as a guest.

The G7 does not have a formal constitution, a permanent secretariat, or any legal enforcement powers. Its decisions are not legally binding on any country.

So why does it matter? The answer is influence.

When the seven leaders or ministers of these countries reach an agreement, it sends a powerful signal to markets, international organisations, and other governments about the direction of policy. The G7's March 27 emergency meeting in France, focused on the Iran crisis, illustrated both the group's strengths and its limitations.

Its strength: bringing together the foreign ministers of the world's most powerful democracies in person, in two days, shows that the group can respond quickly to crises. Its limitation: the statement produced — that the Strait of Hormuz should be reopened after the war — was vague enough to mean different things to different members and did not commit any government to specific action.

Critics argue that the G7 is an outdated club of rich nations that no longer represents the world's real economic power — China, India, and Brazil are not members. Defenders argue that shared values, not just economic weight, should determine membership of a club that aims to coordinate democratic governance.
