Lebanon: One Million People Without Homes
Lebanon humanitarian crisis one million displaced March 2026
Since the war against Iran began on February 28, 2026, more than one million Lebanese people have been forced to leave their homes. That is roughly one in five people living in Lebanon.
The United Nations has warned that the country is on the edge of a humanitarian catastrophe. Lebanon was already in a very fragile condition before this crisis.
The country experienced a massive explosion at its port in Beirut in 2020, which killed over 200 people and destroyed huge parts of the city. Since then, Lebanon has struggled with economic collapse, political dysfunction, and extreme poverty.
Hospitals have few supplies. The government barely functions.
Now, on top of all this, over a million people have been displaced within weeks. The UN's refugee agency representative in Lebanon described the risk of catastrophe as 'real and immediate'.
The European Union responded by announcing €80 million in emergency humanitarian aid for Lebanon. This money will be used to provide shelter, food, healthcare, and protection for displaced people.
EU High Representative Kaja Kallas urged all parties in the conflict to respect Lebanon's sovereignty and avoid turning the country into a secondary battlefield.
