Trump Delays Iran Deadline Again: Ten More Days Before Power Plant Strike Threat Returns
For the second time in days, Trump postpones his Hormuz ultimatum to Iran, citing ongoing talks, while Israel strikes Tehran and Gulf states intercept missiles.
Trump's Iran Delay: Ten More Days as War and Diplomacy Run in Parallel
President Donald Trump announced on March 26 that he was once again postponing his deadline for Iran to fully open the Strait of Hormuz or face devastating strikes on the country's power plant infrastructure. In remarks delivered during a Cabinet meeting, Trump said he was granting Tehran ten additional days, claiming the extension was given at Iranian government request and that negotiations were progressing well. Iran immediately denied that any formal negotiations were taking place, creating a confusing diplomatic picture that left European allies struggling to calibrate their responses.
The postponement followed Trump's statement on March 24 that Iran had made a valuable offer to reach a deal, prompting him to declare: 'We've won this. This war has been won.' The White House offered few concrete details about any prospective agreement or the specific terms Iran had proposed. Administration officials at the Cabinet meeting acknowledged a dual-track strategy — pursuing peace talks while maintaining military pressure — but provided little clarity about what a successful endgame would look like or how the Hormuz reopening would be verified and sustained.
On the same day as Trump's deadline extension announcement, the Israeli military conducted what it described as a wave of strikes in the heart of Tehran. Iranian forces continued their pattern of retaliatory strikes against Gulf states: the UAE said it intercepted 15 ballistic missiles and 11 drones on March 26, with debris from one interception killing two people in Abu Dhabi. Saudi Arabia reported intercepting at least 36 drones aimed at its Eastern Province. Iranian missiles also struck the Israeli coastal city of Netanya, with images of the attack circulating widely on March 27.
