A pro-Iran hacking group claimed responsibility on March 28 for breaking into the personal email account of the FBI Director. The FBI is the main federal law enforcement agency of the United States.

The claim was reported by Euronews. This is a significant cybersecurity incident for several reasons.

First, if it is true, it shows that even senior government officials are vulnerable to hacking through their personal accounts. Many high-profile cyberattacks have happened because officials used weak passwords or clicked on phishing emails on their personal accounts, which have less security than official government accounts.

Second, it shows how the Iran war is extending into cyberspace. Alongside physical military strikes, Iran and pro-Iranian groups are waging a digital war against American and Western targets.

This kind of cyberwarfare is cheaper and lower-risk than conventional military operations. A hacking group can cause significant disruption and embarrassment without risking soldiers' lives or expensive military equipment.

European governments have also warned that their own networks could be targeted. The EU's cybersecurity agency ENISA has reported a rise in cyberattacks against European infrastructure since the war began.
